FIFA is looking to accelerate the process of expanding the World Cup. In an official document, the organization announced its search for an independent agency to evaluate the feasibility of increasing the tournament from 48 to 64 teams as early as the 2030 edition. The contractor will be selected by August 14, with the analysis results expected by September 11.
The leadership of global football outlined the primary objective of this study:
“The analysis should provide a clear strategic judgment: whether the 64-team format is viable and strengthens the football economy, or if it instead dilutes quality, overloads the calendar, complicates implementation, and saturates the market, thereby undermining this initiative.”
Experts will need to examine the impact on player workload, sponsor reactions, and the readiness of host countries to accommodate a tournament of such a massive scale.
