FIFA to End Continental Rotation Rule for 2038 World Cup Hosting
The competition to host the 2038 World Cup is prompting FIFA to reconsider its strict system of allocating tournaments among confederations. With the expanded 48-team format demanding immense resources, countries are increasingly driven to form large-scale transcontinental coalitions.
Under the existing rules, Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia are ineligible to bid for the 2038 World Cup due to recent hosting duties. Nevertheless, France, Italy, Germany, and the United States have already expressed their readiness to host the tournament. Unconventional proposals are also emerging, such as New Zealand exploring an alliance with Fiji and the United States. FIFA now faces a dilemma: either uphold the traditional rotation system and risk losing strong bids or acknowledge that football has evolved to belong to vast regional blocs.
