Mikhail Mudrik’s return to top-level football remains largely tentative—so far, he has only appeared in the closing stages of Chelsea matches, although he has begun to make some incisive contributions. His future, however, remains uncertain.
With little expectation that head coach Xabi Alonso will keep him, there are five potential paths being considered for Mudrik’s next steps.
The most talked-about option is a move to Coventry. Reports suggest that Coventry’s manager Frank Lampard has a personal interest in Mudrik, which seems plausible given their brief overlap at Chelsea in spring 2023. That period coincided with Mudrik starting to find his feet and make his first impactful plays in the Ukrainian Premier League. Lampard may have seen his potential firsthand.
Currently, Coventry is one of the most promising clubs in the English Premier League system. Their promotion campaign last season in the Championship was outstanding, securing advancement well before the end. The squad is solid and well-balanced, but notably lacks a natural left winger. Jack Rudoni is listed in that position but is more of a central midfielder. This situation seems to naturally steer Mudrik towards Coventry, where he might thrive the most.
Another promising destination is Schalke. Similar to Coventry, Schalke has just returned to the Bundesliga after three seasons in the second division, achieving promotion convincingly, though with a less attacking style than Coventry. Under Miron Muslic, the team is strong, ready to compete for a spot in the top tier, and carries the optimism that usually accompanies promotion.
For Mudrik’s development as a quality player, the Bundesliga might be a better fit than the Premier League, offering him more freedom on the pitch than the demanding English environment. It is worth noting that previous Ukrainian players Vladimir Lyutyi and Yevhen Konoplyanka did not have much success at Schalke, but circumstances were different then. Mudrik’s situation is unique. Additionally, there are reports of interest from another German club, Hamburg.
A less certain option is Brentford. It has emerged that Brentford was keen on signing Mudrik in 2022 and even attempted to compete for him in the transfer market, but Chelsea’s €70 million valuation was beyond their reach. The club’s interest remains, and now Brentford reportedly considers taking a risk on a player who is not at the same level as four years ago.
However, Brentford’s squad situation contrasts sharply with Coventry’s. They have more left wingers than needed—three in total. This raises the question of where Mudrik would fit in. Possibly on the right flank, where he has occasionally played. Brentford’s only right winger is Burkinabe Dango Ouattara, who had a strong 2022-23 season with 32 appearances, 7 goals, and 8 assists in the Premier League, making it difficult to displace him. Should Mudrik join Brentford, he would face fierce competition for playing time. The only upside is that he would not have to relocate to a new city.
A logical choice would be Strasbourg. Chelsea and Strasbourg share ownership under the BlueCo consortium, making a loan move to the French club a natural option. This would guarantee Mudrik regular playing time and allow for a clearer assessment of his abilities after a long absence from professional football. Legendary goalkeeper Sergey Baltacha believes that the calm environment of the French league would help Mudrik quickly regain his footballing instincts.
This possibility was discussed even before Mudrik’s suspension was lifted, albeit only theoretically. Interestingly, since Mudrik has returned to team training, Strasbourg has rarely been mentioned as a potential destination. Moreover, reports indicate that Chelsea is currently not considering this option. The reasons are unclear; perhaps Xabi Alonso prefers to wait until the end of preseason to decide whether to keep Mudrik at the club.
Lastly, a more speculative scenario involves Trabzonspor in Turkey. Though not seriously discussed, the Daily Mail mentioned Turkey as a potential new home for Mudrik. If he were to move there, Trabzonspor would be the likely club, which has recently hosted several Ukrainians. Currently, two Ukrainians, Arseniy Batagov and Ruslan Malinovskyi, play there. Mudrik and Malinovskyi have frequently played together for the Ukrainian national team, which could ease his adaptation. The club’s atmosphere is reportedly positive, especially following the arrival of Mohamed Salah.
