The Israel Football Association reacted strongly to comments made by Heimir Hallgrímsson, the head coach of the Republic of Ireland national team, ahead of their UEFA Nations League matches. Hallgrímsson made a politically charged statement during the squad announcement.
When asked how the team would maintain focus amid political tensions, Hallgrímsson declared, “We are not playing with genocide; we are playing against genocide. We are playing against Israel, not with Israel.”
In response, the Israel Football Association issued a statement condemning the use of the term “genocide,” calling it an expression of “stupidity, ignorance, and hypocrisy.” The association’s social media post emphasized, “We do not play with ignorance, hypocrisy, and stupidity — we play against the coach who embodies them.” According to Israeli media reports, the federation is considering filing an official complaint with UEFA regarding the Irish coach’s remarks.
