Iceland national team head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson confirmed that the squad’s second UEFA Nations League match against Israel will proceed as scheduled. On Sunday, the Irish side secured a 3-0 victory over Israel in Hungary after the players voted to go ahead with the fixture.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and the Gaza Strip had led to calls for players to boycott these matches. However, speaking ahead of the game against Austria in Dublin on Thursday, Hallgrímsson stated that the Ireland team would play their second match against Israel and that he was unaware of any team meeting to decide otherwise.
“The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has confirmed that we will play both matches. That was our intention upon arriving at the camp, and it remains so today,” Hallgrímsson said. “We are trying to focus on football. It has already been decided that we will complete all our fixtures.”
