Istvan Kovacs to Referee Japan vs Tunisia in Commemorative Gold-Trimmed Kit
Romanian referee István Kovács will oversee the upcoming match between Japan and Tunisia wearing a unique kit adorned with gold trim. This fixture in Monterrey marks a historic milestone as the 1,000th match in World Cup history. To commemorate the occasion, FIFA’s Referees Committee chairman Pierluigi Collina presented Kovács with a special jersey featuring a golden patch and the number 1000.
“This is a very special game, the thousandth match in the tournament’s history,” Collina commented. “Imagine what it means to be the referee for such a fixture. Officiating this match deserves something exceptional. As you can see, the kit has gold stripes and a special golden badge.”
Beyond the historic significance, the match holds considerable importance for both sides. Japan, coming off a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands, will be without Takefusa Kubo and Wataru Endo due to injury. Meanwhile, Tunisia enters the game amid turmoil after having already dismissed their coach.
