Germany national team head coach Jürgen Klopp has made a definitive choice regarding his first-choice goalkeeper. According to Sport Bild, Marc-André ter Stegen will be the new number one, while the experienced Oliver Baumann will not be included in the upcoming squad.
Although Klopp is expected to announce the official Germany squad on Thursday, the crucial decision concerning the goalkeeper position has already been finalized. Reports indicate that the German coach personally called ter Stegen to inform him of his selection.
This is particularly significant news for ter Stegen, who has endured a difficult spell sidelined by a series of injuries. His return to the national team is scheduled for September 24, with the match taking place in Amsterdam—a notable detail considering ter Stegen currently plays for Ajax in that city.
The most notable absentee from the squad will be Oliver Baumann. The 36-year-old Hoffenheim goalkeeper has not been called up for the upcoming UEFA Nations League window. Baumann was long regarded as one of the successors to the legendary Manuel Neuer in Germany’s goal.
Following ter Stegen, the primary contenders for the goalkeeper spots are Jonas Urbig from Bayern Munich and Alexander Nübel of Stuttgart.
