Luis de la Fuente: We aimed to prove we’re still number one
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente shared his thoughts following his team’s 3-2 victory over England in the opening round of the UEFA Nations League.
“I saw a very strong and powerful opponent, especially during the moments when our level of play dipped. They took full advantage of those situations. England has excellent players and a clear understanding of how they want to play.
For most of the match, we held the initiative and controlled the flow of the game. Every time we launched a counterattack, we caused serious problems for the opposition. We also created very dangerous chances when we maintained possession and built positional attacks. Overall, it was a game that delighted the fans and gave satisfaction to the coaching staff.
Winning any match is difficult, especially against a team like England at Wembley. Today, we proved that we are an outstanding team. We faced another strong national side, but it is in matches like this that you truly make your mark on the international stage, reaching the level where people say: ‘This team is number one in the rankings.’ We wanted once again to show the world that we deserve that status.”
