Manchester City Appeals Premier League Financial Misconduct Ruling
Manchester City has confirmed that it has lodged an appeal after an independent commission found the club guilty on all charges related to breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules. In a brief statement, the club described the commission’s decision as containing “clear and significant errors in law, principles, and facts” and called the ruling “unjustified.”
Maintaining its innocence, the club added that on Thursday evening it submitted “a comprehensive set of irrefutable evidence supporting all its positions.”
Earlier this week, it was confirmed that Manchester City was found guilty on all counts regarding violations of the English Premier League’s financial regulations spanning from the 2009-10 season through 2017-18. Among the commission’s findings was that City had entered into “sham contracts” with several commercial partners as part of a scheme to conceal secret funding exceeding £830 million.
Sources told BBC Sport that as part of the appeal, Manchester City intends to argue that key sponsorship agreements were funded by the Abu Dhabi government rather than the club’s owners.
