Yannik Vestergaard Announces Retirement, Citing Loss of Motivation
Yannik Vestergaard, the former defender who played for several Bundesliga clubs, has announced his retirement from professional football. The Danish international previously featured for Hoffenheim, Werder Bremen, and Borussia Mönchengladbach in Germany.
The player, who has been unattached since leaving Leicester City in the summer, revealed his decision during an interview with the Danish publication Politiken.
“I started to feel tired. It wasn’t just a decline in motivation; it completely disappeared. Now it feels like the right moment to retire,” Vestergaard told Politiken.
At 34 years old, Vestergaard appeared in 185 Bundesliga matches before moving to the English Premier League, where he played for Southampton and then Leicester City. He also earned 59 caps for the Denmark national team, scoring three goals.
