Manuel Neuer Sets Record for Most World Cup Matches Played by a Goalkeeper
Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has etched his name into football history once again. Starting in the match against Ivory Coast, the 40-year-old custodian made his 21st appearance at World Cup tournaments, setting a new record for the most matches played by a goalkeeper in the competition’s history.
Neuer came out of international retirement specifically for this World Cup, and with this milestone, he surpassed the previous record held by France’s Hugo Lloris, who had featured in 20 World Cup games. This tournament marks Neuer’s fifth World Cup campaign, and depending on Germany’s progress, he could extend his lead well beyond his closest rivals.
