Messi Sets World Cup Record with Goals in Seven Consecutive Matches
Lionel Messi became the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches, further extending his record by netting his 19th goal in World Cup tournaments. He found the back of the net in Argentina’s final group stage match against Jordan on Saturday evening.
Messi converted a free-kick after being fouled just outside the penalty area in the 80th minute.
This marked his 72nd career goal from free-kicks and his 12th for Argentina. Messi now has a total of 123 goals for the national team — the second-highest tally in history behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s 145 — achieved over 202 appearances.
Messi did not start the match, as Argentina had already secured first place in Group J, and Jordan was eliminated from playoff contention. He came on in the 60th minute, replacing Lautaro Martinez, who had scored a penalty in the first half.
