Julian Nagelsmann’s failure at the 2026 World Cup turned into a deeply personal ordeal for Oliver Baumann. The 36-year-old goalkeeper had played every minute of Germany’s six qualifying matches and friendly games as the undisputed first-choice keeper. However, just before the tournament, Nagelsmann unexpectedly yielded to pressure and recalled Manuel Neuer to the national squad. The outcome was clear: Neuer took the starting spot, Germany suffered a heavy defeat to Paraguay in the round of 16, losing a penalty shootout for the first time in their history, and Nagelsmann lost his coaching position.
Following his dismissal, Nagelsmann personally reached out to Baumann, who had not played a single minute during the tournament, to apologize. Baumann openly shared details of their hour-long conversation:
“Julian was genuinely sorry about how everything unfolded. We spoke ten days ago and talked for almost an hour. I told him everything that was on my mind. Of course, accepting that decision was incredibly difficult because I had a big goal in mind. But even while on the bench, I tried to give the team my full energy and made sure no negativity came from me.”
Now, Baumann is preparing to prove his worth to the new head coach of the German national team, Jürgen Klopp, with hopes of reclaiming the starting spot for the September match against the Netherlands.
