Argentina national team head coach Lionel Scaloni has revealed who will take over the captaincy following Lionel Messi‘s international retirement, which will come after the friendly against Benin on October 6.
“Cuti Romero will be the captain. Emiliano Martinez will serve as the vice-captain, and Lautaro Martinez will be the third captain,” Scaloni told The Touchline.
Lionel Messi wore the captain’s armband for Argentina for 15 years. He was officially appointed as the permanent captain in August 2011 under coach Alejandro Sabella. Messi played his first match as captain on September 2, 2011, against Venezuela. He maintained the captaincy until announcing his retirement from international football, during which time he experienced a period of setbacks followed by a series of triumphs after Scaloni took charge.
