Thousands of fans gathered on August 8 outside the cathedral in Funchal, on the Portuguese island of Madeira, expecting the wedding of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez. However, the ceremony turned out to be for a different couple. ESPN reported this story a few days later.
In the week leading up to the date, media outlets and social networks circulated messages claiming that Ronaldo and Rodriguez would marry on August 8 in the player’s hometown. Supporters and journalists lined up outside the cathedral with phones and cameras, hoping to catch a glimpse of the footballer and his bride. Yet, the bride who arrived at the cathedral was not Rodriguez but a woman named Nicole. Inside, her groom Fabio awaited her.
The cathedral later confirmed on its social media page that it was indeed Nicole and Fabio who were married, and that the large number of journalists and tourists caused a crowding issue, making it difficult for the bride to enter the church.
“We have never seen anything like this here at the cathedral. The bride had a very hard time getting into the church to get married,” the cathedral’s statement read.
