UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has expressed his belief that the ban on alcohol consumption at football matches, introduced in the 1980s, should be lifted.
“I don’t think it’s fair that football fans are singled out in this way. In my view, this legislation belongs to a different era when football was a very different game. I genuinely believe there are grounds to remove this discrimination. There are various ways to approach this, possibly through experimental measures. But I am not going to abandon my long-held position. I don’t understand how it can be fair that fans of one sport are treated differently from supporters of another,” Burnham told ESPN.
The Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) strongly backed the Prime Minister’s statement, commenting: “It’s unfair to criminalize football fans for having a pint of beer during a match, especially when you can sit in the same seat and drink alcohol while watching an Oasis concert or a rugby game.”
