The Argentina national team begins its title defense with no margin for error. However, the “Albiceleste” have already secured their place in the 2026 World Cup by convincingly winning all three group stage matches.
Today’s encounter carries a certain historic significance. Firstly, Argentina and Cape Verde have never faced each other before, not even in friendly matches. Secondly, the contrast between the sides is clear: the three-time world champions will take on a World Cup debutant who has already exceeded expectations.
Overall, Argentina has a strong record against African teams. The only defeat, likely remembered by all who watched the 1990 World Cup, came in the opening match when Maradona and his squad were surprisingly beaten 0-1 by Cameroon. In the other eight matches against African opponents, Argentina has always emerged victorious.
Setting aside the cliché that “everyone can play football,” there are two main points of intrigue in today’s match. The first is how long Cape Verde and their goalkeeper Vozinhe can keep their goal intact. The second is how many goals Lionel Messi will score, as he has a chance to pull ahead of Kylian Mbappé in the race for the top scorer of the 2026 World Cup.
The Round of 16 match between Argentina and Cape Verde will kick off at 22:00 UTC.
