Locker Room Tensions Rise at Girona Following Player Substitution Disputes
The influential Spanish sports newspaper AS has dedicated a special report to the tense situation at Girona, describing the club as a “powder keg.”
Following the match against Leganés, a serious altercation erupted in the locker room involving, among others, the Ukrainian players Viktor Tsyhankov and Vladyslav Vanat, who both refused to come on as substitutes. The tension had been building due to several players wanting to leave after the team’s relegation.
According to AS, besides the Ukrainians, other players such as Donny van de Beek and Unai also refused to participate or enter the match. There is a clear divide not only between certain player groups but also with the coaching staff.
Tsyhankov had formally informed the club in June of his desire to depart, believing his sporting future was incompatible with the project in Segunda. However, the club is reluctant to let him go cheaply. He is dissatisfied, citing alleged breaches of contract terms and agreements made without his consent. Vanat finds himself in a similar situation, and both are keen to leave. The club is in a difficult position, needing to sell players to balance finances and meet salary limits, but must do so at a high price while players are pushing to accelerate their departures. The Spanish outlet predicts tense days ahead until the transfer window closes.
