Dairis Bertans, the sporting director of the Latvian men’s national football team, spoke candidly about the challenges faced in calling up the country’s top players for international duty.
“First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude and deep respect to those who have been training here and working hard for the past two weeks. The open training sessions generated significant interest, and everyone was full of enthusiasm,” said the long-time Latvian captain.
He acknowledged that there were players the team had hoped to see, who seemed likely to participate, but unfortunately, they are absent and will not be available for this international window.
Having dedicated many years to the national team, Dairis admitted that not all the reasons given by players for their absence were convincing to him.
“From my perspective, the explanations players have provided to us and the national team are not always entirely clear to me, but that probably doesn’t mean they are unclear to the players themselves,” the Latvian added.
Due to various reasons, Rodionas Kurucs, Rolands Šmits, Kristaps Porziņģis, Andrejus Gražulis, and Artūrs Kurucs will be unavailable to support the Latvian national team in the upcoming matches, while Dāvis Bertāns has announced his retirement from international football.
