Rome has secured its second major basketball project, with both clubs set to compete in next season’s EuroCup.
The city has been identified as a key hub in the NBA’s upcoming European league initiative. Following the initial announcements, several investment groups began organizing clubs in collaboration with the Americans. The first to act were Donnie Nelson and Luka Dončić, who acquired Cremona to compete in the top division of the national championship. Their team, Roma, has been confirmed as a participant in the next EuroCup season.
The second project belongs to American Paul Matiashich, owner of Trieste, who purchased the license from Brescia. His club has also joined the EuroCup and will be known as Maxima Roma. The team will be coached by the legendary four-time EuroLeague champion Ettore Messina, who is set to leave Milan.
Both projects have currently received one-year EuroCup licenses and will take part in the Italian championship before joining the new NBA league in 2027.
