Alphonso Davies Ready to Return for Canada in World Cup Playoff vs South Africa
Alphonso Davies is set to feature for the Canadian national team in their opening World Cup playoff match against South Africa. The defender has been sidelined for two months while recovering from a muscle injury.
“Of course, it was painful to watch the first three games from the bench. The only thing you want is to play football. That’s what I’m truly passionate about. In the first game, I really wanted to get on the pitch. In the second game, even more so. By the third game, I approached the coach before the match and asked, ‘Do you think I could get a few minutes?’ He could have said, ‘Yes, we’ll just put you on,’ but obviously, he cares about me and the team as people, so he sat me down… and I thought about it and said, ‘He’s right.’ It was pretty tough to hear,” Davies reflected.
Interestingly, exactly one year ago, the Bayern defender suffered a serious injury during a match at the very same stadium in Los Angeles where he will face South Africa today.
