Anatoliy Trubin, the goalkeeper for Benfica and the Ukraine national team, spoke about the significance of representing his country amid the ongoing war. He emphasized the added weight of responsibility that comes with playing for the national side during such difficult times.
“I believe that playing for the national team is always a tremendous honor for any player, but in this situation, it means even more. There is a huge pressure on you because people are rooting for us and hoping for our victory. So right now, it’s even more important to bring a bit of happiness and light during those 90 minutes on the pitch.
We can’t ignore the fact that in Ukraine, sirens, bombs, and rockets are constantly heard. We can’t hide that. Therefore, it’s impossible to separate football from what is happening in our country and just play. It’s always connected, always together,” Trubin told The Chronicle.
