Andoni Iraola Praises Liverpool After Preseason Win Over Como
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola expressed satisfaction with how his team concluded their preseason preparations, securing a 2-0 victory over Como.
The recent friendly matches had left a somewhat uneasy feeling for Liverpool. While the team showed promising spells against Leeds and Monaco, they ultimately lost their advantage and allowed their opponents to turn the games around.
Therefore, Iraola emphasized that not only the result against Como was important, but also that the team managed to maintain a solid performance throughout and achieve a clean-sheet win for the first time in recent matches.
The coach was particularly pleased with the confident integration of both new defenders, Jérémy Jaque and Ronald Araújo. Jaque has just returned from a lengthy absence due to shoulder issues, while Araújo recently joined on loan from Barcelona.
A key focus throughout the preseason for Iraola has been the team’s ability to sustain his demanding style of play not just in bursts but consistently over the full 90 minutes.
The manager also shared insights into how well the players have adapted to his tactical demands. The main adjustments revolve around off-the-ball play—pressing, player positioning, and team behavior after losing possession. Iraola’s assessment here was positive.
He believes the players understand what is expected of them, are working hard in training, and are willing to alter their usual habits to fit the new system. However, the coach openly admits that perfect execution is still some way off.
With the preseason fixtures now behind them, Liverpool moves into the final phase of preparation for the Premier League. Their league campaign kicks off on August 23 with an away match against Newcastle.
