Ukrainian national team defender Valeriy Bondar has come to the defense of goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk following a costly error that led to the third goal conceded against Ireland. Riznyk misjudged a situation while coming off his line, which proved costly for the team.
“I want to personally support Dmytro Riznyk. He is one of the best goalkeepers in Ukraine and could probably play for a top club. I want to send him words of encouragement. I also hope that fans and experts will stand behind him,” Bondar said.
“When Riznyk makes 15 saves, he is the hero of the match, but if he makes a mistake, suddenly he is not. Goalkeeping is an extremely demanding position where every error attracts heavy criticism. The team has backed him, as have the coach and the supporters in the stands. It is important that he also receives support online, because there is often a lot of negativity,” the player told VZBIRNA.
It is worth noting that both Bondar and Riznyk represent Shakhtar Donetsk at club level.
