Canada Secures Historic 2026 World Cup Round of 16 Spot with Win Over South Africa
Canada became the first team to secure a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a tense and tightly contested 1-0 victory over South Africa.
To be honest, the match was incredibly dull, with neither side willing to take risks. A high volume of errors and a slow pace meant that clear-cut chances were few and far between throughout the game.
Still, Canada showed more attacking intent, particularly through set pieces. In the 17th minute, Jonathan David missed a chance to open the scoring when his first-time shot went just wide of the post following a corner kick. Just before halftime, South African defender Modiba cleared the ball off the line after a header from Derek Bombito.
Inspired by their recent win against South Korea, South Africa played a defensive game, relying on a compact backline. The slow tempo suited the visitors, who began to waste time from the middle of the first half. The only real threat to Canada’s goal came in the second half when Appollis nearly curled the ball into the far corner.
As the match appeared destined for extra time, Canada’s persistence paid off in the 92nd minute. A right-flank attack ended with a cross that South African defender failed to clear properly, knocking the ball straight into the center. Steven Eustachy calmly controlled the ball on his chest before volleying it into the bottom far corner to make it 1-0.
Looking ahead, Canada will face the winner of the Morocco versus Netherlands tie in the Round of 16.
