CAS to Review Senegal’s Appeal Over Africa Cup of Nations Winner
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has revealed new details regarding the hearing over the winner of the recent Africa Cup of Nations. The court is set to review Senegal‘s appeal against the decision that awarded Morocco the title following a controversial final.
The hearing will take place on October 8 in Lausanne. At the request of the football federations of Senegal and Morocco, the session will be held behind closed doors, with no media representatives allowed.
After the hearing concludes, the three-member arbitration panel will deliberate. However, CAS has already announced that no verdict will be delivered on the day of the hearing. The exact timeline for the decision remains undisclosed.
The dispute arose after the Africa Cup of Nations final, in which Senegal defeated Morocco 1-0 in extra time. The controversy unfolded shortly before the end of the second half when the referee awarded a contentious penalty against Senegal. In protest, the visiting team left the field. Following lengthy negotiations, the players returned to watch as Braim Diaz missed the penalty kick.
Although Senegal secured the win in extra time, the African Football Confederation’s appeals court upheld Morocco‘s protest and subsequently awarded the hosts a 3-0 victory. The Senegal federation challenged this ruling by appealing to CAS.
