Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has undergone surgery and may miss the upcoming Scottish Premiership fixture. Assistant coach Sean Maloney is prepared to step in for the match against Kilmarnock.
“I visited him last night,” Maloney revealed. “He was in really good spirits—much better than he was on Monday and Tuesday. Hopefully, that positive mood continues.
Regarding the weekend’s game, it depends on how things develop. We saw him last night during preparations, but he wasn’t around today. I’ll speak with him this afternoon, and he will decide about tomorrow’s match. After that, I expect he’ll make a call about the weekend game as well.”
Maloney, who has previously managed Hibernian and Wigan, admitted it would feel “strange” to lead the team at Rugby Park.
“We will definitely miss him if he’s not there, but we also have to respect what has happened over the past few days. The impact he’s had since October has been incredible—the way he’s worked with the players and staff. We will miss him, but we are ready. We have several brilliant, experienced players, so we’ll see. Ultimately, we will let him make the decision himself.”
