Chelsea Opens Talks to Sign Sunderland Midfielder Granit Xhaka
London-based club Chelsea have initiated talks with the representative of 33-year-old Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka. The experienced Swiss international, who has been performing well at the 2026 World Cup, is reportedly open to reuniting with coach Xabi Alonso, under whom he previously won the Bundesliga. This potential signing marks a shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy, as the club has fielded the youngest squad in the league over the last two seasons and avoided players over 30. The club’s management acknowledges the need to inject leadership qualities into the dressing room.
Sunderland, however, insists that their midfielder is not for sale. The club, having secured qualification for European competitions, is not facing financial difficulties and intends to keep their captain. Chelsea’s interest in the Swiss midfielder is also linked to the possible departure of Enzo Fernández to Real Madrid.
