Cristian Romero Named Argentina Captain Following Messi’s Retirement
Argentina national team head coach Lionel Scaloni has confirmed his choice for the player who will succeed Lionel Messi as the team’s captain. Messi is set to play his final match for Argentina on October 6 at the Monumental Stadium.
Nicolas Otamendi, who had been one of the regular vice-captains for Argentina, recently announced his retirement from international football.
Scaloni revealed that Atletico Madrid central defender Cristian Romero will take over as captain following Messi’s departure, with Lautaro Martinez stepping into one of the vice-captain roles.
“The captain will be Cuti Romero, who was next in line after Leo and Otamendi,” Scaloni said. “Emiliano Martinez will be the vice-captain, and Lautaro Martinez will be the third candidate.”
The previous permanent captain of the Argentina national team was Javier Mascherano, who wore the armband from 2008 to 2011 before the role passed to the then 24-year-old Messi.
