FIFA President Gianni Infantino has abandoned his controversial plan to involve private investors in the World Cup. Following a revolt led by UEFA and other confederations, Infantino was compelled to withdraw his proposal to hand over the tournament’s organization to a private company.
The global football governing body officially announced it would no longer pursue the idea of selling World Cup rights to external investors after the plan faced fierce opposition from all member associations.
FIFA’s strategy aimed to raise up to $4.2 billion by selling approximately 20% of shares in a new entity that would manage FIFA events, including the World Cup, valuing this division at $20 billion.
However, the plan was met with intense backlash worldwide—except for Argentina—and saw not only football authorities but also political forces from the European Union and official stances from UEFA and CONCACAF unite to dismantle Infantino’s scheme.
It is anticipated that the Italian president will lose his position following this debacle, having lost support even within his own organization.
