French sports broadcaster L’Equipe has suspended presenter France Pierron following her remarks about Belgian footballer Jérémy Doku. Doku left his national team camp during the World Cup to be present for the birth of his child in England.
Journalist Clément Garin shared the news of the sanctions on social media, noting that the channel’s management took a firm stance against Pierron. According to the network, her criticism of the player crossed the line beyond acceptable professional commentary.
Pierron’s statement was as follows:
“You have to understand that participating in the World Cup is an immense joy and privilege. Hundreds of footballers would kill to be in your place. This might never happen again in your life. It’s a childhood dream coming true. And you’re going to throw all of that away to be present at the birth of your child, which, excuse my language, is a moment where the father isn’t needed at all. He’s just a statistic, holding a hand and taking photos.”
