Granit Xhaka Rejects Chelsea to Remain Sunderland Captain
Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka has decided to remain at Sunderland despite significant interest from London’s Chelsea. The London club reportedly offered €9.2 million for the 33-year-old playmaker, but Sunderland’s management firmly rejected the proposal.
Last season, Xhaka transferred to the Black Cats from Bayer for €15 million and was immediately handed the captain’s armband. The Swiss international played a key role in Sunderland’s seventh-place finish in the Premier League, helping the team qualify for the Europa League with one goal and six assists. Even the prospect of reuniting with coach Xabi Alonso failed to persuade Sunderland’s leader to change clubs. Currently, Xhaka is competing at the World Cup, where his team has already advanced to the round of 16.
