Kylian Mbappé has revealed that he came close to joining Liverpool back in 2017. According to the French forward, the club held a genuine interest for him, but it was especially his mother who was keen on the move.
“My mother was a huge fan of Jürgen Klopp, and Liverpool was her preferred destination. She wanted me to go there. She took the initiative and went there for negotiations. She visited the city, the stadium, met with people. She went to Anfield and fell in love with it. She attended several matches on her own to soak up the atmosphere because she wanted to imagine me playing at that stadium,” Mbappé recalled.
He added that the talks progressed quite far:
“I remember we were on a plane circling in the sky while Klopp was explaining his project. It’s a funny story. But in the end, I decided to join Paris Saint-Germain because I was born and raised in Paris, and there was no better feeling than proving I could become a star in my hometown,” Mbappé told The Athletic.
