Argentine star Lionel Messi has shared a heartfelt farewell letter to his father, who passed away last week. In the letter, Messi reveals how difficult it was to decide to participate in the World Cup and how much he longed to see his father in the stands as the tournament progressed.
“Dad, you kept asking me to play in the last World Cup… just days before it started, your condition worsened.”
“It was the first time you wouldn’t be with me at the tournament… but Mom kept saying you would get better and be healthy enough to come.”
“I kept telling you we would reach the World Cup final so you could be there; that became my goal again.”
“After every match, I waited for your message but never got it. That’s when I realized how serious things were.”
“I couldn’t stop thinking about going as far as possible, to give you more time and the chance to watch at least one game.”
“We made it to the final, but you weren’t there. I wanted to win to bring you the trophy and show you another one. But I couldn’t.”

“This time, I tried to push beyond my body’s limits, but I failed.”
“I never managed to feel physically healthy.”
