Lothar Matthäus, former Germany international, shared his thoughts on the debut of the national team’s new manager, Jürgen Klopp. Today, the German side will face the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League under Klopp’s leadership.
“Jürgen Klopp will remain true to himself, which means he won’t be overly concerned with what his predecessors did, whether right or wrong. He will carve out his own path, as he has stated in his press conferences. He has clearly set out his expectations.
This explains why he was likely the first and only candidate considered by the German Football Association (DFB) for this role. He doesn’t need to do something radically different from those before him; he just needs to do things properly. In terms of tone, he has already restored something that may have been lost under others.
With Klopp, every player understands their position, for better or worse. For instance, he personally called Deniz Undav and Oliver Baumann to explain why they weren’t selected for the national team. Players appreciate knowing the reasons behind their exclusion, even if it’s not what they want to hear.
At least they are aware of the rationale. Jürgen also told the players involved, ‘I want to see what you’re capable of. You have potential, and you can help bring German football back to the top, where it belongs.’
Jürgen has vast experience, having achieved success with Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool, and Mainz. Over the years, he has built a strong reputation and exudes confidence that should inspire the team. I have complete trust in him,” Matthäus said in an interview with the Bundesliga press service.
