Mathematician Joachim Clement’s World Cup Prediction for Netherlands Fails First Time
German mathematician Joachim Clement has, for the first time, made an incorrect prediction regarding the winner of the World Cup. This year, he backed the Netherlands national team to take the title.
Previously, Clement accurately forecasted the champions of three World Cups. In 2014, he selected Germany; in 2018, France; and in 2022, Argentina. His predictions are based on a “reconstruction analysis” method that factors in not only sporting parameters but also a country’s wealth, the popularity of football there, and an element of luck.
In an interview with Der Spiegel magazine, Clement described the Netherlands as “the strongest football team among those that have never won the World Cup.” The mathematician admitted that he might have subconsciously chosen an unlikely outcome, perhaps to demonstrate that not all of his forecasts come true.
