Mbappé Downplays Messi’s World Cup Scoring Record, Focuses on Team Effort
Kylian Mbappé has responded to Lionel Messi’s historic record for the most goals scored in World Cup history.
In the second group stage match of the 2026 World Cup against Austria, which ended 2-0, Messi scored twice, bringing his total to 18 goals in World Cup finals and surpassing former Germany striker Miroslav Klose, who scored 16. Mbappé now also has 16 goals, achieved over just three World Cups compared to Messi’s six.
“Leo always scores. He has always done it and will continue to do so. If I were focused on what Messi is doing, I would have to work even harder! I don’t dwell on that at all. I only think about helping my national team,” Mbappé told TyC Sports.
