Messi and David Lead the Race for the Golden Boot
Lionel Messi was joined by Canadian forward Jonathan David after his team’s victory over Qatar as the initial leaders in the race for the adidas Golden Boot.
The Argentine, playing in his sixth FIFA World Cup, scored a hat-trick in the match against Algeria (3:0) and equaled Miroslav Klose’s record for the most goals scored in the tournament’s history (16).
David also scored a hat-trick in the match against Qatar (6:0).
Several star players scored two goals each, including Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Harry Kane. Others who achieved this were Johan Manzambi (Switzerland), Folarin Balogun (USA), Kai Havertz (Germany), Yasin Ayari (Sweden), Elijah Just (New Zealand), and Cyle Larin (Canada).
Recall that the adidas Golden Boot will be awarded to the player who scores the most goals in the final tournament. If two or more players score the same number of goals, the deciding factor will be the number of assists.
If, after considering the number of assists, the goal tally remains equal among two or more players, the total number of minutes played in the tournament will be taken into account, with the player who played fewer minutes taking first place.
