The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has officially confirmed that Lionel Messi will play his final match for the Albiceleste on October 6. The friendly encounter is set to take place at the iconic Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires, with the national team of Benin as the opponents.
AFA President Claudio Tapia revealed that after consultations with head coach Lionel Scaloni, the decision was made to invite “the best player in the world and the emblem of our national team” to ensure he receives a fitting farewell on home soil. Messi announced his retirement from international football at the end of August following Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.
The 39-year-old Inter Miami forward has represented the national team in 207 matches, scoring 125 goals, making him the all-time leader in both appearances and goals for Argentina. His most notable achievements include winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, as well as triumphs at the Copa America in 2021 and 2024. The organizers have extended invitations to all members of the 2022 World Cup-winning squad and their families to join the captain for this special evening.
