Nagelsmann Nears Departure as Germany Exit World Cup Early
According to Bild, the German Football Association (DFB) has offered Julian Nagelsmann the option to resign following Germany’s early exit from the 2026 World Cup. The national team was eliminated in the round of 32 after losing to Paraguay in a penalty shootout.
Today, Nagelsmann held a three-hour meeting with DFB officials Bernd Neuendorf, Hans-Joachim Watzke, Rudi Völler, and Andreas Rettig. Bild reports that the 38-year-old coach was presented with the opportunity to step down two years before his contract expires, allowing him to “leave the team with his head held high.”
Nagelsmann has been given time to consider the proposal, but it appears his tenure as Germany’s head coach is nearing its end regardless. Should he choose not to resign, the DFB would have to activate a contract termination clause, which is reportedly estimated to cost around €7 million in compensation.
The situation is expected to be resolved by early next week, with Jürgen Klopp remaining the frontrunner to take over as the new head coach of the German national team.
