European Football Clubs (formerly known as the European Club Association) may soon have a global counterpart. At the recent general assembly, its chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi announced the need to establish an organization called World Football Clubs.
“From Copenhagen to Cairo, from New York to Tokyo, fans can follow their clubs with the same passion as if they were in the stadium. EFC has become a global network and platform enabling clubs to connect with anyone. That is why now is the right time to create World Football Clubs. But we must act together. It is time to stop thinking only about our own interests. Let’s unite. Protect each other. Work together. Don’t give up. Then we will all achieve our goals,” Al-Khelaifi said, according to the official EFC website.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, some attendees at the assembly view World Football Clubs as an unofficial “sixth confederation” that could challenge the authority of FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino.
