Bordeaux has taken a crucial step towards rejoining official competitions. The French club, which has faced severe financial difficulties and a ban from tournaments, has reached an agreement to sell itself to the British investment fund Park Bench for the symbolic price of one euro.
The deal includes the buyer assuming Bordeaux’s debt obligations. The club hopes that the arrival of new owners will help avoid bankruptcy and create the conditions necessary for the team to return to the French football system.
The six-time French champion was relegated to the sixth division due to its financial crisis. In the coming days, representatives from Park Bench are expected to meet with the regional commission responsible for club oversight and management.
This commission must approve the change of ownership and Bordeaux’s budget for the 2026/27 season. Only after this approval will the club be able to officially register its team to compete in Régional 1.
Even after the football authorities make their decision, Bordeaux’s recovery process will not be complete. The commercial court will then take charge, reviewing the club’s restructuring plans.
Despite its current troubles, Bordeaux remains one of France’s most renowned football clubs. Founded in 1881 in the southwest of the country, the club has been home to notable players such as Alain Giresse, Jean Tigana, Zinedine Zidane, and Bixente Lizarazu over the years.
