Mauricio Pochettino, the Argentine coach, has called for Chelsea to be stripped of their 2016/17 Premier League title and for it to be awarded to Tottenham Hotspur, the team he managed at the time, which finished second, seven points behind the Blues.
Following Chelsea‘s acquisition by new owners in 2022, a report revealed 74 breaches of the English Football Association’s rules involving undisclosed payments to unregistered agents during transfer dealings between 2011 and 2018.
“We should have won the Premier League; that title should have been awarded to us. If these allegations are true, then we unquestionably deserved to be champions that year. It’s impossible to compete when some clubs follow the offside rule and others do not, or when one team plays with VAR and another without. The rules must be the same for everyone. Only then can you build the best team. I’m not saying Chelsea played badly or that Antonio Conte wasn’t outstanding. But if you break the rules, that’s it: the title should go to the other team,” Pochettino told Metro.
