Spanish referee Ortiz Arias faces suspension and removal from officiating duties following his performance in the Madrid derby between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.
According to the website Archivo VAR, the referee has already been sanctioned with a ban covering the next two matchdays.
Reports from Spain highlight four significant refereeing errors during the game.
The first mistake occurred when Atletico Madrid defender Cristian Romero stepped on Jude Bellingham. Ortiz Arias initially issued a yellow card to Bellingham, despite the foul being committed by Romero. After VAR intervention, the referee reviewed the footage on the pitchside monitor and corrected his decision, showing a yellow card to Romero instead.
The second error was more blatant: a foul by Lee Kang-in on Federico Valverde. Lee caught Valverde’s ankle with the studs of his boot, an offense clearly warranting a straight red card.
Despite being just meters from the incident, Ortiz Arias did not issue any card, not even a yellow, and VAR did not intervene.
The third mistake, which was later rectified, involved a penalty awarded against Dino Haesen in favor of Julian Simeone.
The fourth error came to light this morning after video footage from the stands was released: a penalty awarded to Real Madrid for a handball by Pubill following a shot from Kylian Mbappé. This incident was never shown again during the match for review.
