Romero Reflects on His Impact as He Leaves Tottenham for Atletico Madrid
Defender Cristian Romero has bid farewell to Tottenham Hotspur following the completion of his transfer to Atlético Madrid. The La Liga club secured the 28-year-old Argentine’s services for a fee of £34.2 million, with Romero signing a five-year contract.
Romero initially joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 and quickly established himself as a key figure in the Spurs’ defense. Over his tenure, he made 156 appearances and was instrumental in the club’s 2025 UEFA Europa League triumph.
Reflecting on his time at Tottenham, Romero wrote, “I know I was not perfect, but one thing comforts me: I always gave my all. I wore this shirt with pride and from the heart. When I arrived, I had a clear dream: to leave my mark on the history of this club.
I understood that the only way was through hard work, sacrifices, and achieving what for so long seemed so difficult: lifting a trophy again. And we did it.
I am leaving the club, but a part of my heart will remain here forever. Once, I was one of you. Today, I leave while always remaining one of you. Thank you for everything.”
It is worth noting that Romero’s final appearance for Tottenham came in April during a match against Sunderland, where he left the pitch in tears due to a knee injury. This injury sidelined him for the last six Premier League games of the season.
