Scotland Begin Search for New Head Coach Following World Cup Exit
Scotland is now in search of a new head coach following Steve Clarke’s departure after the team’s exit from the 2026 World Cup.
The Scots finished Group C with three points, trailing behind Brazil and Morocco. They failed to qualify for the round of 16, missing out as one of the best third-placed teams.
Shortly after Croatia’s 2-1 victory over Ghana on Saturday evening, which confirmed Scotland’s elimination from the group stage, the national team’s official Twitter account announced: “Steve Clarke has stepped down as head coach of the Scotland men’s national team. Our most successful national team manager has concluded his seven-year tenure following our participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”
In a lengthy open letter addressed to fans on the Scottish Football Association’s website, the 62-year-old coach reflected, “The most emotional part of this farewell is connected to my players, without whom none of the memories we have created from 2019 until now would exist.
They deserve all the praise and admiration they receive, and it has been a true honor for me to be their coach.
Thank you for the opportunity, and best of luck to my successor.”
Ian Maxwell, the Scottish Football Association’s Chief Executive, expressed gratitude to Clarke for his record-breaking contributions.
The Scottish Football Association is actively searching for a new manager ahead of the Nations League campaign, which kicks off in September.
