South Africa Goalkeeper Proud Despite Round of 16 World Cup Exit
South Africa’s goalkeeper Ronwen Williams reflected on his team’s narrow defeat to Canada in the Round of 16. The African side fell just short after Eustáquio scored a stoppage-time winner.
“I’m incredibly proud of the boys and how they showed their qualities. We came here to fight on equal terms. We can leave the tournament with our heads held high. I’m proud of the team—its commitment, character, and resilience. We kept fighting until the very end.
We didn’t start this tournament well and were backed into a corner, but today we stepped onto the pitch and showed what we are capable of. We can only be proud of ourselves. We have a very young team. This will be an important lesson for the boys going forward, and we have every reason to be proud of our performance.
It’s sad to go out like this, but I know the coach will be proud of us. He saw how his team fought. Resilience and belief—that’s what he instilled in us from day one. Even when almost no one believed in us, he always supported us. We can only thank him for giving us faith and hope. He inspired the whole country. If this is his last job, he can walk away with his head held high. It was incredible,” Williams said.
