US President Donald Trump has declared that the potential removal of FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who is currently under pressure, would be a “terrible mistake.” Trump’s support came in response to an open letter from UEFA, CONCACAF, and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), which accused Infantino of undermining trust “through deception” related to his failed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project.
The FFE plan involved creating a new company to manage commercial rights and ticket sales for all FIFA competitions, including the World Cups, with 21% of the shares to be sold to a private investment firm.
Trump’s comments mark the first time he has publicly defended Infantino since the FFE plans were revealed on July 28.
“FIFA would be making a terrible mistake if for any reason it even considered replacing President Gianni Infantino,” Trump wrote on social media.
“He is a fantastic person, having just led the most successful World Cup in history, four times bigger than all previous ones. If he leaves, the tournament will never be as successful or profitable again.”
It is worth noting that Infantino maintains close ties with Trump and awarded him the inaugural FIFA Peace Award in December 2025.
