Tuchel Addresses Man City Players’ Concerns Amid Financial Scandal and Relegation Threat
The Independent has reported on a tense atmosphere within the England national team camp, stemming from the financial troubles facing Manchester City. Following an independent commission’s ruling that the club committed violations, Manchester City now faces the threat of severe sanctions, including possible relegation. Despite this turmoil, three City players—Marc Guehi, Elliot Anderson, and Nico O’Riley—were called up for the current Three Lions matches.
Ahead of the UEFA Nations League clash against Croatia, England head coach Thomas Tuchel openly addressed how the players are reacting to the ongoing situation at their club. He said, “Are they worried? I think it’s a very human reaction when you don’t know what’s happening with the club you signed for. They are young and ambitious. They are told they are completely innocent, but they still don’t know the details. Of course, it’s a topic of conversation. We talk about it over breakfast and lunch. I know the Manchester City players receive a huge number of messages and calls. I’m not sure if it distracts them on the pitch—I don’t notice it during training or team meetings—but it’s simply impossible not to discuss it.”
The German coach emphasized that a potential relegation of Manchester City from the Premier League would not close the door on national team selection for those players. “I always try to pick the best performers for each camp or tournament. I would never exclude players just because they are not playing in the top division of their country. Every case needs to be considered individually.”
