US Authorities Detain Iran Captain Ahead of Group Match vs Egypt
Ahead of their crucial group stage match against Egypt in Seattle, the Iranian national team faced pressure from US authorities. According to Al Jazeera, star striker Mehdi Taremi and assistant coach Saeed Alhoyi were detained by US border officials at the Mexico border. This incident caused a 25-minute delay in the departure of the entire Iranian delegation.
The Iranian Football Federation issued a statement condemning the host side for deliberately creating difficulties and disrupting the team’s schedule. Although the reasons for the delay were not disclosed, both team representatives were eventually allowed to rejoin the squad after the investigation. Due to strict US visa restrictions, the Iranian team is forced to base themselves in Tijuana, Mexico, and only fly into the United States shortly before their matches.
